Improve your pronunciation
with Real Spanish

Our pronunciation courses supplement our Spanish courses based on clips from movies and TV.

Because no matter how well you know grammar, how extensive your vocabulary is, or how many expressions you know, you will find it difficult to participate in conversations with native speakers if you have trouble pronouncing some sounds or can’t recognize some words and phrases when they are joined up in native speech.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand native speakers talking at top speed because the words seem to flow like a river and you can’t distinguish the individual words. And maybe they don’t understand you either, even though your grammar and vocabulary may be correct, and you may have managed to incorporate some great expressions, because your own pronunciation confuses or distracts them.

Our courses in «Mejora tu pronunciación» will help tune your ear to Spanish and make your own speech easier to understand. It’s unlikely that you will end up with a native-speaker accent, but you can sound more natural and less hesitant, feel more confident, speak more fluently and, above all, be understood.

Each lesson deals with a different problem and consists of two parts:

  • A video-lesson consisting of an explanation and demonstration by the virtual teacher, contrasting Spanish and English pronunciation.

  • An interactive session where you can practise the pronunciation of words and phrases and compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker.

The key to improving your pronunciation is repetition, repetition and more repetition, watching the video-lesson several times and listening very carefully. For this reason we recommend the use of good-quality headphones and microphone. Then we recommend that you repeat the interactive session over a period of several days until your pronunciation sounds closer to that of the native teacher. Then you can ask Spanish-speaking friends, a Spanish teacher or your language exchange partner to listen to you repeating words and phrases from the lesson and give you feedback.

The pronunciation you hear in «Mejora tu Pronunciación» is standard Spanish from Spain, which is understood throughout the Hispanic world. That’s why you will hear the «z» in Zaragoza and the «c» in cero pronounced like the “th” in “thin”. However, even in Spain this sound is pronounced differently in various regions of the country. However, it doesn’t matter if you pronounce this sound like “th” in “thin” or the “s” in “sin”; people will understand you anyway because they are used to this variation.

Every vowel in Spanish has only one sound: for example, «e» is always pronounced like the “e” in “extra”, with the mouth tense. In contrast, English has several sounds that are written as “e”. For example, as well as the “e” in “extra”, there are different sounds of “e” in “legal”, “women”, “the”, “there” and “mother”.

Pronouncing Spanish «e» with one of these sounds contributes to a marked foreign accent. But don’t worry, with this course you can reduce your accent by improving your pronunciation of these vowel sounds in Spanish:

  • 2.1 La vocal «a»
  • 2.2 La vocal «e»
  • 2.3 La vocal «i»
  • 2.4 La vocal «o»
  • 2.5 La vocal «u»
