You may already know of some examples. That even appeared in newsppers in other countries. What an embarrassment, indeed! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">You'll also pick up one of the most notorious false friends in Spanish: <em>embarazada<\/em> does not mean <em>embarrassed<\/em>. Did you know that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>Note: This transcript has been lightly updated to reflect our current courses and resources. The video may vary slightly.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Hello and welcome to Real Spanish! Take a look at this clip from one of our video lessons \u2014 it's about two art restoration cases that went so badly wrong they became a source of national embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p>Spain invests a great deal of money, technical expertise, and care in the upkeep and restoration of its artistic heritage: its monuments, buildings, paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. Spanish people are very proud of their monuments and works of art.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These words are used in the video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>invertir<\/strong>\u00a0 to invest<\/p>\n<p><strong>la destreza<\/strong>\u00a0 skill, expertise<\/p>\n<p><strong>el esmero<\/strong>\u00a0 care, diligence<\/p>\n<p><strong>el mantenimiento<\/strong>\u00a0 upkeep, maintenance<\/p>\n<p><strong>el patrimonio (art\u00edstico)<\/strong>\u00a0 artistic heritage<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By the way, do you know the difference between <em>ser orgulloso<\/em> and <em>estar orgulloso<\/em>? For example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ellas est\u00e1n orgullosas de haberse graduado<\/em> (they are proud to have graduated)<\/p>\n<p><em>Me parece que este hombre es orgulloso por naturaleza (I think this man is proud by nature). <\/em><\/p>\n<p>We explain the use of <em>ser<\/em> and <em>estar<\/em> with various adjectives in the grammar notes.*<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway \u2014 I said Spanish people are very proud of their monuments and works of art\u2026 but not always. Every so often, a restoration job comes to light that shocks everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a1Por favor! \u00a1Madre m\u00eda!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a1Es una chapuza!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapuza<\/em> is a colloquial word used to describe a job that has been done badly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>Tenemos que llamar al fontanero, se nos ha vuelto a estropear el grifo de la cocina. (We need to call the plumber \u2014 the kitchen tap has broken again.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celia: <\/strong>\u00bfOtra vez? Bueno, pero esta vez llamamos a un profesional porque la \u00faltima vez nos hicieron una chapuza. (Again? Right, but this time we're calling a professional \u2014 the last timer they did a botch job.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>S\u00ed, es verdad, es mejor pagar m\u00e1s por un trabajo bien hecho. (You're right, it's worth paying more for a job done properly.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By the way \u2014 I imagine you already know that <em>avergonzado\/avergonzada<\/em> means \"embarrassed\", while <em>embarazada<\/em> means \"pregnant\". <em>Embarazada<\/em> and <em>embarrassed<\/em> is one of the many false friends in Spanish and English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chico: <\/strong>\u00bfNo vas a ir a la fiesta de tu amiga esta noche? (Aren't you going to your friend's party tonight?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chica: <\/strong>No, estoy avergonzada de lo mal que me comport\u00e9 con ella anoche\u2026.
