I\u2019m Elizabeth, from Real Spanish, and a keen learner of Spanish, like you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009292;\">I\u2019ve always been fascinated by how languages use the human body to express everything from mood and attitude to honesty and betrayal. Think of the expression \u201cto put your foot down\u201d in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009292;\">Spanish is full of such expressions. The first time I heard someone talk about a politician who\u2019d been <em>pillado con el culo al aire<\/em> \u2014 literally \u201cwith their backside\/arse\/ass in the air\u201d \u2014 I guessed from the context that it was something like \u201ccaught with their pants\/trousers down\u201d (caught out in an embarrassing or scandalous situation). I loved the image. That\u2019s the thing about body part idioms in Spanish: they\u2019re vivid, memorable, and often very funny. Once you know them, you start hearing them everywhere. <em>Con el culo al aire<\/em> is often used in conversations about corrupt politicians or badly-behaved celebrities. Every country has them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009292;\">In this video, our virtual teacher Celia introduces several expressions with parts of the body. Some are perfectly polite in any situation, while others are a bit vulgar. But they\u2019re all real Spanish, used by native speakers every day, so it\u2019s definitely worth knowing what they mean, even if you choose not to use them yourself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #009292;\">Why not start your own collection of Spanish expressions? I keep a running list, and I add to it whenever I hear something new: in podcasts, films, or just chatting with native speakers. At Real Spanish we\u2019re creating a series of mini-lessons on expressions that refer to parts of the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Do you always <em>dar la cara<\/em> \u2014 in other words, do you face up to the consequences of your own actions? In Spanish there are lots of colloquial expressions related to body parts. For example, <em>levantarse con el pie izquierdo<\/em> (literally, \u201cto get up on the left foot\u201d) means to be in a bad mood or to have a bad day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">But we can also be in a great mood when we sleep <em>a pierna suelta<\/em> \u2014 in other words, when we\u2019ve slept soundly all night and woken up feeling properly rested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>What\u2019s the matter with you? Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Celia: <\/strong>Don\u2019t ask. I don\u2019t feel like talking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>I see\u2026 Well, I slept like a log! I haven\u2019t slept that well in ages!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">There are lots of expressions to describe someone who is angry or fed up. For example, <em>estar hasta las narices<\/em> (to be fed up to the back teeth), <em>hasta la coronilla<\/em> (up to the crown of your head), <em>hasta el mo\u00f1o<\/em> (up to your bun), <em>hasta los cojones<\/em>\u2026 but watch out with that last one \u2014 it\u2019s pretty vulgar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Celia: <\/strong>I\u2019m completely fed up with having to pick your clothes up off the floor! I can\u2019t take it any more!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>Come on, don\u2019t be like that. I\u2019ll pick them up\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Another expression is <em>tener la lengua muy larga<\/em> (to have a very long tongue), which means to say things that should be kept quiet \u2014 in other words, to not be a discreet person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>Your sister has a big mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Celia: <\/strong>Why do you say that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Antonio: <\/strong>She told your parents we\u2019re thinking of getting married. You shouldn\u2019t have told her \u2014 now the whole family will know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">As you can imagine, some body part expressions are quite vulgar. For example, these two are very commonly heard:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>dejar a alguien con el culo en el aire<\/em> \u2014 to leave someone exposed, in an embarrassing situation<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>lamerle el culo a alguien<\/em> \u2014 to brown-nose someone to suck up to someone<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Well, I hope you enjoyed this video. It\u2019s a bit vulgar, but it\u2019s used a lot, especially when talking about a politician who has been caught red-handed.<\/p>\n<p>Have you heard the expression <em>por los pelos<\/em>?
