And I\u2019m sure you know that the best way to remember the grammatical structure is to translate \u00abgustar\u00bb as \u201cto please\u201d, \u201cto be pleasing\u201d or \u201cto cause pleasure\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Me gusta viajar = travelling gives me pleasure = I like travelling\/to travel<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But when you want to express the preferences and interests of other people, you may make mistakes, right? That\u2019s very common, because these verbs can be complicated even for students at an advanced level of Spanish.<\/p>\n<h2>Let\u2019s explain why.<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing you need to know is that there are many verbs which function like \u00abgustar\u00bb. Here is a list of the most common:<\/p>\n<table class=\"blueTable\" style=\"height: 879px;\" width=\"871\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>aburrir<\/td>\n<td>to bore, to cause boredom<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>apetecer<\/td>\n<td>to appeal, to be appealing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>asustar<\/td>\n<td>to frighten<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>caer bien\/mal<\/td>\n<td>to be likeable\/unlikeable<br \/>\nMe cae bien Luis = Luis is likeable to me = I like Luis<br \/>\nYo le caigo bien a Luis = I am likeable to Luis = Luis likes me<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>dar miedo (pena\/asco\/verg\u00fcenza etc.)<\/td>\n<td>to cause fear (sorrow\/disgust\/shame etc.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>divertir<\/td>\n<td>to amuse<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>doler<\/td>\n<td>to cause pain<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>encantar<\/td>\n<td>to cause great pleasure<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>enganchar<\/td>\n<td>to captivate, to hook, to seize someone\u2019s interest<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>faltar<\/td>\n<td>to be missing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>fascinar<\/td>\n<td>to fascinate<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>fastidiar<\/td>\n<td>to annoy<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>favorecer<\/td>\n<td>to favour; to suit (e.g., a haircut. clothing)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>importar<\/td>\n<td>to be important, to matter<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>impresionar<\/td>\n<td>to impress<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>interesar<\/td>\n<td>to interest<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>molestar<\/td>\n<td>to bother<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>parecer (bien\/mal\/raro\u2026)<\/td>\n<td>to seem (good\/ bad\/ strange etc.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>preocupar<\/td>\n<td>to worry, to cause worry<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>quedar (bien\/mal)<\/td>\n<td>to suit (clothes, shoes etc.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>saber mal<\/td>\n<td>to make someone feel bad<br \/>\nMe sabe mal que\u2026 it feels bad to me that\u2026 = I feel bad\/sorry that\u2026<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>valer<\/td>\n<td>to be useful, to be worth it<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Actually most of these verbs (except apetecer, doler, favorecer, quedar bien\/mal) can be used in two different ways, although this is the most common : \u00abme gusta\u00bb (singular subject), or \u00abme gustan\u00bb (plural subject).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Me gusta <u>el cine<\/u><br \/>\n<strong>\u00abEl cine\u00bb<\/strong> es el sujeto de la oraci\u00f3n<br \/>\n= Cinema gives me pleasure<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><u>Yo<\/u> le gusto a Pedro<br \/>\n<strong>\u00abYo\u00bb<\/strong> es el sujeto de la oraci\u00f3n<br \/>\n= I am pleasing to Pedro<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<table class=\"blueTable\" style=\"height: 191px;\" width=\"581\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A m\u00ed) me gusta\/n<\/td>\n<td>Yo gusto (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A ti) te gusta\/n<\/td>\n<td>T\u00fa gustas (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A \u00e9l\/ella\/usted) le gusta\/n<\/td>\n<td>\u00c9l\/ella\/usted gusta (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A nosotros\/as) nos gusta\/n<\/td>\n<td>Nosotros\/as gustamos (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A vosotros\/as) os gusta\/n<\/td>\n<td>Vosotros\/as gust\u00e1is (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<td>(A ellos\/as\/ustedes) les gusta\/<\/td>\n<td>Ellos\/as\/ustedes gustan (a alguien)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>So far so good, right? But students often have difficulty referring to other peoples\u2019 preferences and interests, because they forget to use pronouns and the preposition \u00aba\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: red;\"><del>Mi padre gusta<\/del><\/span> &gt; <strong>A<\/strong> mi padre <strong>le<\/strong> gusta<\/p>\n<p>Also, with \u00aba m\u00ed, a ti, a ella\u00bb, etc., many students also forget to use the pronouns \u00abme, te, le, etc.\u00bb because they think it is an unnecessary repetition. But you always have to use these pronouns!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: red;\"><del>A Juan gustan los animales<\/del><\/span> &gt; A Juan <strong>le<\/strong> gustan los animales<\/p>\n<p>So the use of \u00aba m\u00ed, a ti, a \u00e9l, etc.\u00bb is not obligatory unless we need to be emphatic or specify the name of the person we are referring to.
