It\u2019s also known as el D\u00eda de la Hispanidad (Day of the Hispanic identity), because it is also celebrated in Latin America under various names: D\u00eda del Encuentro de Dos Mundos (Chile), D\u00eda de los Pueblos Originarios y del Di\u00e1logo Intercultural (Peru), D\u00eda del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Argentina), D\u00eda de la Raza (Honduras, El Salvador). In the USA it\u2019s celebrated as Columbus Day. In Canada it falls on the same day as Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure style=\"text-align:center;\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Estatua-Colon1.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n in Barcelona\" \/><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSpeaking about Columbus:  This statue is emblematic of Barcelona. Strangely, the statue is pointing in the wrong direction, towards the Mediterranean, to the east\u2014 and Columbus didn\u2019t set sail from Barcelona.<\/p><figcaption>(Statue of Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n in Barcelona)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align:center;\">\n    <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mapa-americas2.jpg\" alt=\"Las Am\u00e9ricas\" \/><\/p><figcaption>Las Am\u00e9ricas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>By the way, in Spanish \u201cAm\u00e9rica\u201d often means what people in many other countries call \u201cThe Americas\u201d or North, Central, and South America.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align:center;\">\n   <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/USA-Map-And-Flag2.jpg\" alt=\"USA\" \/><\/p><figcaption>USA <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>And although this country is often called America in colloquial language, its formal name is Estados Unidos, with the initials EEUU. The letters are duplicated to indicate the plural form.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align:center;\">\n   <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fiesta-nacional1.jpg\" alt=\"National Holiday Spain\" \/><\/p><figcaption>National Holiday <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>To get back to the Fiesta Nacional in Spain: traditionally it includes a military parade attended by the king and other members of the royal family, along with the President and other representatives of the central government, as well as representatives of the autonomous communities of Spain.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align:center;\">\n   <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Virgen-del-Pilar1.jpg\" alt=\"La Virgen del Pilar\" \/><\/p><figcaption>La Virgen del Pilar <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In Spain the date coincides with the Fiesta del Pilar, in honour of the patron saint of  Hispanidad.
