What does this mean? Well, partying, spending the whole night out in bars or clubs. We also say \u00absalir de juerga\u00bb or \u00absalir de parranda\u00bb. If someone really likes to party, we can say \u00abtiene mucha marcha\u00bb or \u00abes muy marchosa\u00bb. There is also the adjective \u00abjuerguista\u00bb but with a slightly stronger sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abLa marcha\u00bb is also used to talk about the gears of a car engine: to engage first gear, second gear, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The expression <strong>\u00ab<\/strong>marchar como la seda<strong>\u00bb<\/strong> means that something is going very well, without difficulties. Silk is a very soft fabric, and you can pass your hand over it very smoothly, hence the expression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Another expression that we use a lot is to do something <strong>\u00ab<\/strong>sobre la marcha<strong>\u00bb<\/strong>, which means to improvise, to do something \u201con the go\u201d, without a plan, without preparation.<\/p>\n<p>There are many more expressions with \u00abmarcha\u00bb,\u00a0 \u00abmarchar\u00bb, or \u00abmarcharse\u00bb<em>,<\/em> and we explain some in the mini-lesson \u00abMarchando\u00bb. It means the waiter is going to bring your order right away, or is going to get to work right away, like switching on a machine.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy-460x307.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/marchando-copy-310x207.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But the verb \u00abmarchar\u00bb and the noun \u00abla marcha\u00bb have many different uses.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The verb \u00abmarchar\u00bb<\/strong> has two principal meanings:<\/h2>\n<h4>In the armed forces \u00abmarchar\u00bb means \u00abto march\u00bb. <strong>For example:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/marching.jpeg\" alt=\"Marching\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Los soldados marchan en fila durante el desfile militar.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Referring to a machine, a business, a relationship, \u00abmarchar\u00bb means \u201cto work\u201d, in the sense of function well. <strong>For example:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/lavadora.jpeg\" alt=\"Lavadora\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Esta lavadora no marcha bien, necesitas llamar al mec\u00e1nico. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Este restaurante no marcha bien desde que cambiaron al cocinero.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Su relaci\u00f3n con su novia no marcha bien.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The pronominal verb \u00abmarcharse\u00bb means \u201cto leave a place\u201d. For example: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>Me marcho de casa de mis padres porque quiero vivir sola y ser independiente. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/boxes.jpeg\" alt=\"Boxes\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The noun \u00abla marcha\u00bb has several meanings: <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/investors.jpg\" alt=\"Investors\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>The functioning of a machine or a business. For example: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Los inversores tienen dudas sobre la marcha del negocio. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/racewalking.jpeg\" alt=\"Racewalking\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>La marcha also means the way someone walks. In athletics \u00abla marcha\u00bb is \u201cracewalking\u201d. For example:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Laura ha ganado la competici\u00f3n de 10 kil\u00f3metros marcha.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/gearshift.jpeg\" alt=\"Gearshift\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00abLa marcha\u00bb is the gear or gearshift of a car engine: For example:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Para cambiar las marchas del coche tienes que pisar el embrague (the clutch).<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Expressions with \u00abmarcha\u00bb:<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"bfoto\"><strong>\u00abIr o salir de marcha\u00bb<\/strong> means to go out partying or to go out to bars or discoth\u00e8ques until late at night. For example:<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1158\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/partying-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Partying\" width=\"356\" height=\"200\" \/><em>El s\u00e1bado voy a salir de marcha con mis amigas, vamos a ir a bailar a una discoteca nueva donde ponen una m\u00fasica muy buena.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"bfoto\"><strong>\u00abTener marcha\u00bb<\/strong> describes someone who loves partying. For example:<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/love-party-1.jpg\" alt=\"Dance\" width=\"356\" height=\"201\" \/><em>Mar\u00eda tiene mucha marcha, siempre sale los fines de semana y se acuesta a las 6 de la ma\u00f1ana, le encanta bailar.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"bfoto\"><strong>\u00abSobre la marcha\u00bb<\/strong> means \u201cas I\/you\/we, etc. go\u201d.
