In this video Miguel explains the pronunciation of the ce (C), the ese (S) and the zeta (Z) in different areas of the Hispanic world.<\/span><\/span>Hi! I\u2019m Miguel from Real Spanish. From time to time you&#8217;ll see me here explaining some vocabulary, grammar or other aspects of Spanish. Today I am going to explain the various ways to pronounce the <em>ese<\/em>, the <em>ce<\/em> and the<em> zeta<\/em> in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>In most of Spain, the e<em>se<\/em> is pronounced like the words \u201csing\u201d, \u201cso\u201d, and \u201ccivil\u201d in English. Listen: <strong>seis, estrella, manos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the <em>ce<\/em> before an <em>i<\/em> or an <em>e<\/em> is pronounced like the \u201cth\u201d in \u201cthing\u201d or \u201cthrough\u201d. Listen:\u00a0<strong>cena,\u00a0 acento, cita.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the <em>zeta<\/em> is always pronounced like the \u201cth\u201d in \u201cthing\u201d and \u201cthrough\u201d. Listen:\u00a0<strong>zapato,\u00a0 zeta, C\u00e1diz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are those who say that this phenomenon arose because a king of Spain had a lisp, and the entire court imitated him to flatter him. But it&#8217;s just a story, it&#8217;s not true.<\/p>\n<p>But in some parts of the south of Spain, the <em>s<\/em>, the <em>ce<\/em> and the <em>zeta<\/em> are pronounced the same: <em>cena, acento, cita; zapato, zeta, C\u00e1diz<\/em> and in the last one, it is not even pronounced. This phenomenon is called <em>seseo<\/em>. This pronunciation came to America due to colonization, since most of the colonizers who came to America from Spain were from Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p>But in other parts of Andalusia, the <em>ese<\/em>, the <em>ce<\/em> and the <em>zeta<\/em> are pronounced like the \u201cth\u201d in English. This phenomenon is called <em>ceceo<\/em>. Another phenomenon of Andalusian and Latin American speech is that the <em>ese<\/em> and <em>zeta<\/em> at the end of a word are aspirated: that is, they sound like a very soft <em>hache<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Watch this clip, which is a report about the Spanish working day.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Estoy trabajando hasta las ocho o las nueve de la noche, sin parar. Also look at the stress and intonation, which are very typical of Argentinian pronunciation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mir\u00e1, si\u00a0entend\u00e9s\u00a0de estas cosas de dinero y de\u00a0acciones\u00a0ten\u00e9s\u00a0que explicarme un d\u00eda\u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 porque yo no me entero de nada, me parece que\u00a0tengo\u00a0la cabeza muy dura.<\/li>\n<li>Pero\u00a0mir\u00e1, de todas formas estos diez euros mejor me lo das ahora,\u00a0no nos vayamos\u00a0a olvidar m\u00e1s tarde, \u00bfviste?<\/li>\n<li>S\u00ed, claro, te los doy ahora.
