This is the first of a series of videos on this topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Hello and welcome to Real Spanish!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you already know that the Spanish that\u2019s spoken in Spain is not the same as the Spanish spoken in Latin America. The accents and many words vary from country to country, and even among different parts of the same country. Also, some grammatical forms vary. Argentinian Spanish is very different from Colombian Spanish, and Andalusian Spanish is quite different from the Spanish spoken in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Normally you\u2019ll understand and be understood in any Spanish-speaking country\u2026 although it\u2019s good to know some words that can cause confusion or embarrassment. For example, the verb \u00abcoger\u00bb, in common use in Spain, has sexual connotations in some Latin American countries.<\/p>\n<p>Another dangerous word: in Spain \u00abConcha\u00bb is a common female name. It's not a reference to seashells that you find on the beach; it\u2019s the diminutive of the name Concepci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>But watch out! In Latin America, \u00abconcha\u00bb may refer to the exterior part of the vagina. In Argentina it\u2019s very common to say, \u00ab\u00a1La concha de tu madre!\u00bb, as an expression of anger. In Spain it\u2019s more common to say \u00ab\u00a1Hijo de puta!\u00bb or \u00ab\u00a1La madre que te pari\u00f3!\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some less risky examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>El zumo in Spain is jugo in Latin America<\/li>\n<li>El m\u00f3vil is a celular in Latin America<\/li>\n<li>El ordenador is a computadora in Latin America<\/li>\n<li>Las gafas are anteojos in Latin America (because you wear them in front of your eyes)<\/li>\n<li>El coche es el carro o el auto in Latin America. In Spain, el carro is a cart or trolley in a supermarket.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In some of our courses and mini-lessons we have examples of Spanish from various places, to help you to understand native speakers, wherever they are from. For example, in this clip, one of the characters is from Argentina, while the other is from Galicia, in Spain. Listen:<\/p>\n<p>- Hombre, yo era director de un banco, de esas cosas entiendo algo.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>- \u00a1Che! \u00a1Director de banco! \u00a1Qu\u00e9 b\u00e1rbaro! \u00bfVos qu\u00e9 sos, otro Rockefeller?<\/p>\n<p>One of these days I\u2019ll bring you other examples of the different varieties of Spanish.
