Unfortunately, even some native speakers choose the wrong form from time to time. In this video, Virginia helps you to decide which to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Hello and welcome to Real Spanish!<\/p>\n<p>Are you unsure about when to use \u00abfuera\u00bb or \u00abafuera\u00bb? I\u2019m not surprised, even native speakers don\u2019t agree about when we use these adverbs of space.<\/p>\n<p>Normally with verbs of movement (towards the exterior\/outside) both forms can be used, especially in Spain. For example, we can say, \u00abSi tienes calor, sal fuera\/afuera\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>With verbs that describe state or situation, such as \u00abestar\u00bb, or with the meaning \u201coutside, in the exterior\u201d, \u00abfuera\u00bb is usually used in Spain. However, in Latin America \u00abafuera\u00bb is more commonly used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Estamos fuera, en el jard\u00edn. (Espa\u00f1a)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Estamos afuera, en el jard\u00edn.\u00a0 (Latinoam\u00e9rica)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Los ni\u00f1os juegan fuera, en la calle. (Espa\u00f1a)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Los ni\u00f1os juegan afuera, en la calle. (Latinoam\u00e9rica)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same with the adverbs \u00abdentro\u00bb and \u00abadentro\u00bb. With verbs of movement \u00abadentro\u00bb is used, with the meaning of \u00a0\u201ctowards the interior\/inside\u201d, although when it\u2019s used with a preposition it\u2019s preferable to use \u00abdentro\u00bb.\u00a0 Look at these two examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">El camarero nos llev\u00f3 adentro del restaurante.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Caminamos hacia dentro de la cueva.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Latin America \u00abadentro\u00bb is usually used, even with prepositions, but is avoided in formal or educated speech. For example, \u00abEl hombre puso la maleta adentro del armario\u00bb. (colloquial)<\/p>\n<p>With verbs that describe state or situation it\u2019s more common to use \u00abdentro\u00bb with the meaning of \u201cinside; the interior part\u201d, especially in Spain. For example, \u00abEstamos dentro, en la casa\u00bb. However, in Latin America it\u2019s also common to use \u00abadentro\u00bb with the same meaning:\u00a0 Estamos adentro, en la casa.<\/p>\n<p>But when it\u2019s followed by the preposition \u00abde\u00bb, it\u2019s always better to use \u00abdentro\u00bb: \u00abEl abrigo est\u00e1 dentro del armario\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, have you heard the expression \u00abde puertas afuera\u00bb? For example, \u00abSe comporta muy bien de puertas afuera\u00bb, which means \u201che\/she behaves well in public\u201d but maybe not \u00abde puertas adentro\u00bb, which means \u201cin private, at home\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all for today, but did you know you can get a transcription, in English or Spanish, in our blog?
