Look at these examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Te debo la vida. I owe you my life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Te debo 50 euros. I owe you 50 euros<\/p>\n<p>When \u00abdeber\u00bb is followed by an infinitive, it expresses obligation and is very similar in meaning to \u00abtener que\u00bb + infinitive, but is a bit softer. Also, \u00abdeber + infinitive\u00bb is more often used in formal contexts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Debo hablar con mi abogado. I should\/I ought to speak to my lawyer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Tengo que limpiar la casa. I have to clean the house.<\/p>\n<p>When \u00abdeber\u00bb is followed by the preposition \u00abde\u00bb, it expresses a hypothesis, conjecture, or probability. For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">El director del banco debe de ser un hombre muy serio, \u00bfno? The director of the bank must be a really serious guy, right?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Debes de estar muy cansado despu\u00e9s de un viaje tan largo. You must be very tired after such a long journey.<\/p>\n<p>With other verb tenses (in past or conditional forms), \u00abdeber\u00bb expresses an obligation or a necessity that has not been fulfilled. For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Debiste aceptar la oferta de trabajo. You should have accepted the job offer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Deber\u00edas haber estudiado m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">You should have studied more.<\/p>\n<p>It can also be interpreted as an unfulfilled wish. For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">El hombre que me atropell\u00f3 deber\u00eda haber ido a la c\u00e1rcel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The man who ran over me should have gone to jail.<\/p>\n<p>Another use of this verb is \u00abse debe a\u00bb + noun or \u00abdebido a\u00bb + noun to express cause, similar in meaning to &#8220;because of&#8221; + noun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Su dolor de espalda se debe a la falta de ejercicio f\u00edsico. His back pain is due to a lack of exercise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Debido a las fuertes lluvias han cancelado el concierto. The concert has been cancelled due to heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, \u00abdeber\u00bb is a noun that means &#8220;obligation&#8221; or &#8220;duty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">El deber del ciudadano es comportarse de forma civilizada. It is a citizen\u2019s duty to behave in a civilised manner.<\/p>\n<p>A common expression is \u00abel deber me llama\u00bb, when we have to do something even though we may not want to.\u00a0 It&#8217;s often used to excuse ourselves before leaving. For example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Me encantar\u00eda quedarme un rato m\u00e1s contigo, pero el deber me llama. I&#8217;d love to spend more time with you, but duty calls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">OK, now you ought to see (deber\u00edas ver) the video again in order to understand and learn everything.
