They seem to mean the same but actually they have different meanings.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abVer\u00bb is our physical ability to perceive with our eyes. It&#8217;s the same as &#8220;see&#8221; in English. For example, \u00abLo vi robar la bici con mis propios ojos\u00bb (I saw him steal the bike with my own eyes).<\/p>\n<p>\u00abMirar\u00bb means to direct our eyes towards something. It&#8217;s more intentional, a conscious action that requires concentration. It&#8217;s the same as &#8220;watch&#8221; or &#8220;look&#8221; in English. For example, \u00abNo me mires, acabo de levantarme\u00bb (don&#8217;t look at me, I just got out of bed), or \u00abMira a esa bailarina, es incre\u00edble\u00bb (Watch that dancer, she&#8217;s amazing).<\/p>\n<p>But of course, there are always exceptions. Unlike in English, in Spanish it&#8217;s more common to say \u00abver la tele\u00bb o \u00abver una pel\u00edcula\u00bb&#8230; although some people use \u00abmirar\u00bb in this context, especially in areas where Catalan is spoken.<\/p>\n<p>The same differences exist with \u00abo\u00edr\u00bb, to perceive with the ears, and \u00abescuchar\u00bb, to pay attention to what is heard&#8230; the same as in English. That&#8217;s why we say \u00abescuchar m\u00fasica\u00bb (to listen to music) but, \u00ab\u00bfpuedes o\u00edrme?\u00bb, for example, when there is static on the phone line.<\/p>\n<p>There are many expressions in Spanish with the words \u00abver\u00bb or \u00abmirar\u00bb. \u00a0One of these days we&#8217;ll explain some of them in a new mini-lesson.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know you can try a sample mini-lesson, completely free?
