



{"id":7311,"date":"2023-02-28T17:33:03","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T17:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/?p=7311"},"modified":"2023-03-01T17:56:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T17:56:26","slug":"falsos-amigos-2-some-spanish-and-english-words-you-should-never-mix-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/en\/blog\/useful-vocabulary-and-expressions\/falsos-amigos-2-some-spanish-and-english-words-you-should-never-mix-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Falsos amigos 2: some Spanish and English words you should never mix up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #309696;\">This is the English\u00a0 transcription of our second video about some \u201cfalse friends\u201d that can cause problems for English speakers.\u00a0 False friends (falso amigos) are words that look and sound very similar in English and Spanish because they are derived from the same Latin roots, but nowadays they have different meanings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #309696;\">If you just want to listen to the audio, you can get it on <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/realspanish\/falsos-amigos-2-virginia-explica-algunos-de-los-mas-comunes\/s-ras6UQE0FHC?si=f92cf29e8d9c4e989547710c2d16400f&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\">Soundcloud<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>English Transcription:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hello and welcome to Real Spanish!<\/p>\n<p>Today we bring you some examples of \u201cfalse friends\u201d, that is, words that in English sound similar to Spanish but have a different meaning, such as \u201clibrary\u201d (which in Spanish means \u00abbiblioteca\u00bb) and \u00ablibrer\u00eda\u00bb (which in English means \u201cbookshop\/bookstore\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Another false friend that causes confusion is \u201cto realize\u201d, which doesn\u2019t mean \u00abrealizar\u00bb, as you might expect, but should be translated as \u00abdarse cuenta de (algo)\u00bb. \u00abRealizar\u00bb means <em>to carry out, to do<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Other frequently-confused words are \u201clarge\u201d and \u00ablargo\u00bb. \u201cLarge\u201d should be translated as \u00abgrande\u00bb in Spanish, and \u00ablargo\u00bb as \u201clong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the English word \u201ccarpet\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u00abcarpeta\u00bb; it\u2019s an \u00abalfombra\u00bb. A \u00abcarpeta\u00bb is a \u201cfolder\u201d in English.<\/p>\n<p>Well, as you can see it\u2019s very important to learn these words because if you make a mistake, you could create an embarrassing situation.
