I\u2019m Antonio, a teacher with Real Spanish. Do you know the expression \u00absalir de rositas\u00bb?\u00a0 It means someone has done something to earn a punishment or a scolding, such as a child\u2019s prank, but doesn\u2019t receive blame or the punishment. (To get away with it.)<\/p>\n<p>Another expression with \u00absalir\u00bb is \u00absalirse con la suya\u00bb. For example, listen to this conversation between Antonio and Celia, leaving a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Antonio: I don\u2019t want to go out for dinner with that couple ever again. She\u2019s a real pain, always wants to argue about something.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Celia: Well, you\u2019re right, tonight she just wouldn\u2019t stop complaining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Antonio: First she doesn\u2019t eat pizza because she doesn\u2019t eat bread, next she doesn\u2019t like Mexican food, then the bar on the corner is really tacky\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Celia: The rest of us wanted to go to Pedro\u2019s bar but in the end she got her own way, as usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abSalir\u00bb has many other uses. To say this you would have to use the verb <em>salir<\/em>, and you may have been unsure about how to use it. For example, you can\u2019t say <span style=\"color: red;\"><del datetime=\"2020-06-15T12:44:19+00:00\">salir a tapas<\/del><\/span>, <strong>but<\/strong> you can say salir a tapear or salir de tapas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/salir-de-tapas.jpeg\" alt=\"Salir de tapas\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can say salir a comprar or salir de compras \u2014 but with two different meanings. Salir a comprar means to go out to buy food because you have to, it\u2019s an obligation or a basic necessity, while \u00absalir de compras\u00bb is for pleasure, it\u2019s not a necessity: for example, to go shopping for clothes, shoes, handbags, etc.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>salir a + infinitivo <\/strong><br \/>\n<em><strong>Example:<\/strong> Tengo que salir a comprar comida, mi nevera est\u00e1 muy vac\u00eda.<\/em><\/td>\n<td>to go out to do something, for a specific purpose: to go out running, to go for a walk, to go out to eat, to go out for tapas.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>salir de + sustantivo<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><strong>Example:<\/strong> Este fin de semana voy a salir de compras, han abierto un centro comercial nuevo con muchas tiendas de ropa.<\/em><\/td>\n<td>to go out for a leisure or social activity: to go out for tapas, to go out to a party, to go shopping, to go for a walk.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/centro-comercial.jpeg\" alt=\"Centro comercial\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The verb also has many other meanings and is used in many colloquial expressions. Here are some common examples:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Different meanings of the verb <em>salir<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/bird-cage.jpg\" alt=\"Bird\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To go outside or out of a place<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> El p\u00e1jaro sali\u00f3 de su jaula. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/sunrise.jpg\" alt=\"Sunrise\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To appear, to become visible<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Examples:<\/u> Va a salir el sol.<br \/>\nMi padre va a salir en televisi\u00f3n. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/mancha-vino.jpg\" alt=\"Wine\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To disappear or come out (e.g., a stain out of a fabric)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u><br \/>\nLas manchas de vino tinto salen muy bien con bicarbonato.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/responsible.jpg\" alt=\"Responsable\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To show one\u2019s character or attributes<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u><br \/>\nTu hijo ha salido muy responsable. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/chess.jpg\" alt=\"Chess\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To be the first (second, third, etc.) person to participate in a game or competition <\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Si jugamos al ajedrez, \u00bfqui\u00e9n sale primero?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/money-buy.jpg\" alt=\"Buy\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To cost<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Estas patatas salen a un euro el kilo. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/money-share.jpg\" alt=\"Corresponder pago\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To amount to, to come out to (money)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Examples:<\/u> Hemos ganado 60 euros, as\u00ed que salimos a 20 euros cada uno.<br \/>\nEl alquiler del coche cuesta 200 euros, as\u00ed que salimos a 50 euros cada uno. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.realspanish.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/exam-result.jpg\" alt=\"Exam\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To get good results in an exam or test<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> \u00bfC\u00f3mo te ha salido el examen? Creo que bien. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Colloquial expressions with <em>salir<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Salir con alguien:<\/strong> To go out somewhere with someone; also to go out with someone in the sense of a romantic relationship.<br \/>\n<em><u>Examples:<\/u>Voy a salir con mi amiga Marta esta noche, hace tiempo que no nos vemos.<br \/>\n-\u00bfEst\u00e1s saliendo con alguien? -S\u00ed, estoy saliendo con Luis, llevamos poco tiempo juntos.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir del armario:<\/strong> this is a translation of the English expression \u201cto come out of the closet\u201d (make public one\u2019s homosexuality). This expression in turn comes from \u201cto have a skeleton in the closet\u201d (to have something to hide, something embarrassing in one\u2019s past).<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Hay mucha gente famosa que todav\u00eda no ha salido del armario.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir pitando<\/strong> To rush off somewhere (literally, to go out whistling). In the past the police blew whistles when they were chasing a thief, to warn other police officers. When thieves heard the whistle they ran off, trying to get away. Another explanation is that the expressions refers to the whistle blown by railway staff when the train leaves the station.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> En cuanto me dijo mi madre que hab\u00eda tenido un accidente sal\u00ed pitando de casa para ir a verla al hospital.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salirle a alguien de los huevos:<\/strong> to do whatever you (feel) like. Los huevos is a vulgar word for testicles, so this expression is more commonly used by men. It\u2019s a rather strong vulgar expression of annoyance or disgust.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> No voy a limpiar el coche porque no me sale de los huevos, estoy harto de que siempre me est\u00e9s dando \u00f3rdenes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir con algo:<\/strong> to say or do something unexpected or at in inopportune time.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> \u00bfAhora me sales con que no tienes tiempo? Me lo pod\u00edas haber dicho antes, \u00bfno? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salirle un trabajo o empleo a alguien:<\/strong> to find or get a job.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Por fin me ha salido trabajo de modelo, estoy muy contenta. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir a su padre\/madre:<\/strong> to take after someone in looks or personality.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Pedro ha salido a su padre, es igual de trabajador que \u00e9l.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir caro algo a alguien:<\/strong> to end up or turn out badly.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> Quiso parecer un chico valiente saltando desde muy alto a la piscina, pero le sali\u00f3 caro porque acab\u00f3 con una pierna rota. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir adelante:<\/strong> to come out ahead; to overcome a difficulty.<br \/>\n<em><u>Example:<\/u> A pesar de la crisis logramos salir adelante gracias a que mis padres nos dieron dinero para pagar la hipoteca y comprar comida. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Salir rana:<\/strong> to turn out or end up badly. The origin of this expression is related to fishing: if someone ended up with a frog instead of a fish, this was a big disappointment. However it might also be a reference to fairy tales where a princess has to kiss frogs in order to find her Prince Charming.
